Founder Ferdinando Innocenti decided in 1960 to get involved in the automotive industry. He obtained the license for the Austin A40 and later the Mini, but he also wanted his own model: the 950 Spider. The mechanical base came from the Austin-Healey Sprite, the body was Italian and designed by Tom Tjaarda at Ghia.
