After a 10-year hiatus, the Portuguese duo "Her Name Was Fire" has released an album that makes us forget the anemic releases of QOTSA. I’m not sure how the two guys intend to present their compositions—which are simultaneously complex and catchy—in a live setting. Well, the record is so good that the band will essentially be compelled to perform it live. I would have personally chosen the second track, "Facekicker," as the opener, as it is somewhat more straightforward—less unwieldy...
The small but excellent German label "Broken Music" regularly surprises me with interesting releases. Their latest is from the Osnabrück band "The Neurophonic Temple," and the name says it all. I haven't heard a trio where the drummer sings since the 80s, when Dan Beehler (Exciter) was screaming and powering his heart out on drums. "The Neurophonic Temple" focuses on creating a homogeneous sound where the vocals are more of an additional instrument than a messenger. The song has a healthy dose...
For Swedes, it seems it's not difficult to make catchy rock music without pandering to musical role models, creating a sound that perfectly blends fuzzy stoner, kick-ass punk, and metal. And then I hear just 11 killer songs, including my absolute favorite, "Prayers of Fire," which seems to have come straight from the 80s: rock, metal, a touch of synth-pop, a catchy chorus, and the perfect drive for dancing and headbanging. It is what it is: something good doesn't need many words.
Guys, it's just one song, but it has five tags. Okay, the differences between the tags are minimal, and there's a little bit of everything in this incredibly heavy rocking concoction from the most exciting late 70s. I just hope that the upcoming songs on the album, released on February 16th, have a similarly short fuse and then ignite a firework display of ideas and influences. And then Micah can sing too. So, with this mix, nothing can go wrong; straight-ahead, hard stoner metal with a proper...
This means class and constant good musicianship if you can repeat the same review one and half year later for the next appetizer for the next masterpiece of record. I just copied and pasted "The fewer tags an album needs, the straighter the music is. This is what happened with the New Zealand band Sidewinder. They go through the entire history of stoner in just under 3 minutes with fat riffs, a fat fuzz guitar and a cutting, aggressive female voice". A fantastic appetizer for the album that...
Sometimes I receive emails that turn into more than just a quick click-and-delete because I don't like the music. That's what happened when Sergio, one of the employees at Aloud Music in Barcelona, sent me an E-Mail. I've had this label on my radar ever since the AM Festival in 2018 (https://www.heavystoned.eu/live-report/amfestival-2018/. Aloud Music releases music far removed from the mainstream and has a real knack for discovering new acts. For example, Emma Ruth Rundle first played at the...
