Red Dust (FRA) - (no)Hope

This album is heavy and stoned, heavy in the Black Sabbath sense, stoned in the sense of numerous references to Kyuss and Fu Manchu. To this already potent brew is added a raspy, clearly sludge-influenced vocal style, rounding out this current trinity of heavy music. What's more bothersome is the track order: there are three blocks of two songs each, all drawn from the same genre. For example, the opener (no)Hope and the following "Bloody Vampire" are more in the rockier Fu Manchu or Kyuss vein, the next two songs ("Ghost Inside" and "The Last of Us") are more in the dusty, dry desert rock of Kyuss or early Monster Magnet, while the final two tracks, "Sign of a Time" and "Become a Hero," are reminiscent of Black Sabbath. The vocals are also heavily textured and sludgy, resulting in an overall musically interesting mix. It's a shame that the chosen song order results in a loss of some dynamism within the album. There's no doubt, however, that the songs will be a hit live.
