After a 10-year hiatus, the Portuguese duo "Her Name Was Fire" has released an album that makes us forget the anemic releases of QOTSA. I’m not sure how the two guys intend to present their compositions—which are simultaneously complex and catchy—in a live setting. Well, the record is so good that the band will essentially be compelled to perform it live. I would have personally chosen the second track, "Facekicker," as the opener, as it is somewhat more straightforward—less unwieldy...
hear feels less like a classic doom album and more like a compact alternative rock festival squeezed into one record. Temptress jump between stoner grooves, grunge attitude, soft psychedelic moments, and slow doom parts — sometimes all within the same track. Instead of sticking to one mood, the band treats the album like a mixtape. One minute you get hypnotic riffs, the next you're hit with bouncy grunge energy or airy vocals. Not everything lands, and the production plays it a bit too safe,...
With the majority of stoner bands, you have to be happy that a reasonably experienced singer is singing. The English band Dunes has the luxury of having two excellent voices, which alone stand out from the grey mush of "only" lower-pitched music. They have also packed their musical roots such as alternative rock and grunge into a fluffy, booming sound corset, which is very direct, straight and hits the mark. So far, only two songs are available on bandcamp, namely "Voodoo" and "Riding the Low",...
At the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Paris, it was clear to even the smallest person that France and French society are deeply permeated with culture. Not with fashion, as in Italy, but with culture. This requires courage to make art, to cross boundaries and to combine the impossible. Just like Gojira. Not quite as extreme, but with an unmistakable aesthetic, Mauvais Sang from Paris come along. Somewhere between alternative and art rock, a text that cannot be topped in terms of...
Actually, you can´t repeat any feelings from your past life. Pam Risourié managed to put me back in 1989 to 1991, when I was completely in Sonic Youth, Mazzy Star, Eleventh Dream Day, Yo la tengo and others. This record is an authentic time capsule from the past which I keep close to my heart. Merci!!
Mr. Bison managed a balancing act between a medieval guitar riff which sounds like an Americana band in the first minute. After that first minute there are two Jon Andersons singing in a twin harmonic vocal line along a syncopic drumming. Then they put a couple of guitar layers over the two vocal lines. 3 minutes gone, mouth and eyes wide open, what a masterpiece of a song.
