As a musician, I don't only appreciate music that fits into my prefabricated musical patterns, but also bands that are simply good bands and operate at a high level both technically and compositionally. This includes the Slovenian band Ambra, whose music doesn't really appeal to me because it doesn't fit into my rock and roll-influenced framework. Ambra is closer to Mastodon, Tool, and Gojira than to Motörhead, and I'm curious how they compose their music, how a band manages to play rhythms that are outside of a 4/4 time signature. With Ambra, you can hear not only the musical class but also the struggles within the band to play such highly complex songs. The positive tensions between the members are actually audible and palpable thanks to Jakob Rejec's fantastic voice. His voice gives these mountains of riffs, hooks, and solos a clear, edgy polish and ultimately provides the necessary dynamic structure for each song. In my opinion, it's unimportant what the individual songs are called, because each one is a highly complex structure in itself, which also has to be performed live on stage. It's this tension between the heaviness of all the instruments and the compositions on the one hand, and the almost crystalline-sounding voice that effortlessly carries it all, on the other. A fantastic album.
