We would like to thank Dominik (Downfall of Gaia, All Noir-PR) for the guest list spot and 4NDREAS for organizing the concert. Without them, we probably would never have discovered this fantastic band and would never have seen and experienced this concert. Together with the long-established Munich band "Verstärker," it was a cohesive and compelling musical package. Musically, "Verstärker" can be placed somewhere between Motorpsycho—in terms of the jams—Mogwai—in terms of the dreamy...
I've often wondered, what kind of voice would suit to my favorite post-rock and post-metal bands like Pelican, Russian Circles, and Toundra, and what would that voice sing about? I've known the answer ever since I first heard the French band Endeavour. It was clear to me then that the music had to be thematically situated in the delicate, fragile realm of the human soul, interpreted by a voice that perfectly balances anger, melancholy, and intensity. James Maynard Keenan of Tool and Joel...
Many thanks to my Bandcamp algorithm for suggesting this masterpiece. Despite my penchant for 3-minute rock 'n' roll songs, my brain craves unpredictable, dynamic music that caters to my tastes with bands like Tool, Amenra, Morne, Communic, Soen, Toundra, and others. This year I discovered the Catalan band Syberia and immersed myself in their walls of sound; what the Canadian band Matador achieves with their latest album borders on genius, a keen sense for the perfect balance of vocals,...
I actually hate the sound of a piano because it lacks midrange frequencies and the sound is thin despite the instrument's immense weight. It actually makes me aggressive, except for Elton John's "Song for Guy." The Belgian band "We Stood Like King" uses the piano as the lead vocalist, much like Brian Johnson of AC/DC is the saxophone in a blues-rock band. And you know what? This damn piano plays such beautiful melodies within this sometimes brutal sound, which, in my opinion, will be far too...
Very clever of my new favorite band to omit the vocals and end the all-too-obvious flirtation with 70s prog rock. I find the instrumental version better because, in this case, the vocals distract from the band's brilliant musical abilities, and the vocals should be on the same high level. I disliked that over the years with Mastodon as well, because none of the three or four singers could really sing well, and the vocals were more of a distraction. Or, my favorite example of a huge discrepancy...
As a musician, I don't only appreciate music that fits into my prefabricated musical patterns, but also bands that are simply good bands and operate at a high level both technically and compositionally. This includes the Slovenian band Ambra, whose music doesn't really appeal to me because it doesn't fit into my rock and roll-influenced framework. Ambra is closer to Mastodon, Tool, and Gojira than to Motörhead, and I'm curious how they compose their music, how a band manages to play rhythms...
The song "Magna Mater" made me cry because of its beauty and perfect composition. I was absolutely overwhelmed by the multi-layered instrumental tracks, the fantastic voices - be it the choirs or the lead vocals - and the images that appeared before my eyes as I listened. That's why I set "Primordial" as the tag, because their song "Stolen Years" with its pure beauty and epic melancholy brought tears of joy to my eyes at the beauty of the music, both then and now. I added Paradise Lost due...
Quebec City's Sandveiss has a reputation for balancing heavy and melodic, but Standing in the Fire takes that to a whole new level. This isn’t just another rock album—it’s a journey. A sonic exploration where the band pushes their limits while still holding onto that raw, gritty essence that got them here in the first place. From the moment you press play, you’re in for a ride. The first single, I’ll Be Rising, is a perfect snapshot of Sandveiss at their best: a blend of heavy...
This album is a product of patience, prompts and presets with AI. I never expected that AI is able to compose such complex songs like the opener "Fractal Fragments". I added some effects via GarageBand, cut some parts out of the song. The whole song sounds like a singing bowl with electric guitars within the orbit. The title "Torn Territory" resulted by the oriental hook inside the track, the lyrics refer to the ancient states in the Middle East Moab (red), Edom (green), Pathros - Upper Egypt -...
