Justin Sullivan (New Model Army) characterized the French soul as follows during an announcement at Hellfest 2022: In France, only two things matter: Food and Love. What he forgot was that with both pillars of French society you need time for enjoyment to arise. The same applies to the French band “Voodoo Queen” and their new music video “Bright Cage”. When I first listened to it, the length of the instrumental passages bothered me because for me songs have to start after 15 seconds, the hooks have to be between 5 and 10 seconds long and if the singer can't sing, every second is too long. Well, with this song and with this band, the long instrumental passages are there to lead up to the fantastic vocals, which feel just as warm as the sound, and the long hooks lead back to the almost hypnotic riff, which in turn leads to the hypnotic vocals. The song lasts almost 6 minutes, but then feels like 2 minutes because it's not boring but exciting and interesting.
Then I listened to the entire album and realized that this band does that for an entire album. Of course the band isn't reinventing the wheel, but reassembling it from old parts and plating it with chrome.
