We first met Curt in 2017, shortly after his release from prison. We saw him four times with Zeke, and now, seven years later, he's back with the ultimate Seattle answer to High on Fire. Okay, Dirty Old Buzzard is dominated by rock 'n' roll and a certain FOAD attitude. The opener, "Bag of Nails," kicks off in true Motörhead style—pure snotty rock—which is then followed by "Death Becomes Your Dying Wish," a song more in the doom or sludge vein, a pretty furious track with annoying semitones. "Hell Hath No Fury" comes pretty close to a Zeke song in terms of speed, except that at three minutes, it's almost twice as long. With "Rotten Minds," you might think that a six-minute song is automatically slow. That's wrong, because the band rocks, barks, and roars their way through this track at a mid-tempo pace. "Traitor to Your God" is, unfortunately, the dreaded nine-minute doom/sludge torture. It's the song I like the least, while the cover of Motörhead's "The Hammer" is more than convincing. Sadly, the closing track, "Not My Cross to Bear," is a long and furious blues number that's also not really my cup of tea. So, for a difficult second album, it's a good one. The follow-up should show more stylistic consistency, and considering that Motörhead no longer exists and there are too many doom and sludge bands around, the band should orient themselves more towards Motörhead and Rock 'n' Roll than towards depressive and life-denying music.
