Shadows Taller Than Souls (USA) - Ouroboros

The notes on the Bandcamp page include a statement from the band. I quote: “Ouroborus, the debut album from SttS, brings together material written since the band's inception. The album's themes include neglect, contempt, grief, disillusionment, and everything related to them.” To summarize: songs that have been around for a while, timelessly well-composed, with lyrics on equally timeless themes. I remember: Iron Maiden's debut album came out in 1980, on which all the songs were, on average, three to four years old, with themes that still fascinate listeners today. Okay, that might be a pretty high bar to set, but the quality of the songs, which draw on American rock history from the MC5 and Stooges through Psychedelic to Grunge, is brilliant. Somehow, that snarling, ear-piercing voice, which further hammers the sometimes monstrous songs into your ear, also fits perfectly. It's not an album to listen to casually, but rather an acoustic detective game where you recognize the influences and simultaneously realize that this quite talented band has made something unique out of them. The album is a mixtape of the most important and best musical styles from the US, and therefore it's exciting from the first to the last chord.
