As someone from southern Germany, I have a natural aversion to everything that comes from the rest of Germany, and especially from Berlin. It's all loud, hyped, insubstantial, and much ado about nothing. But since Kadavar, there have been bands from Berlin to whom these attributes no longer apply. The quintet Rising Dao, with their latest release "Zero Some Game," is one such example. The jam-heavy album impresses with a pleasantly warm, mid-range-focused sound, interspersed with lyrical collages sung by a pleasantly full and pitch-perfect voice. The entire album seems like a fleeting yet meticulously crafted endeavor, as the songs are very complex and peppered with all sorts of stylistic references to the 70s. All the songs demonstrate not only musical skill but also a knack for creating varied and vibrant tracks. The organ is a bit too prominent for my taste, although it contributes significantly to the overall warm sound. I wouldn't be surprised to see this band at this year's Desertfest in Berlin's Columbia Theater. They certainly deserve that recognition.
